John Howard’s name was adopted by the Society to acknowledge his work in advocating for human prison conditions. The 19-century English nobleman spent time in a French prison and learned firsthand that prisons needed reform. He understood that those imprisoned for debt and others coming out of prison needed help to turn their lives around and become productive citizens. In addition to Howard’s accomplishments as the Father of prison reform, he also established literacy programs for ex-prisoners.
